Research and evaluate information on flipped classrooms at the elementary level

Debbie Wolff
Present 07/12- 08/20/12
Currently am researching various information on flipped classrooms, created pinterest board and joined “flipped classroom Network”
Created a pinterest board for flipped classrooms:

Brianbennett.org
Edudemic.org
Edweek.com
Knewton.com
Flippedclassroom.org
Flippedclassroom.com
Youtube.com

Learn about the flipped classroom model; apply information to an elementary classroom. Watch various flipped recordings on different topics to gain an understanding about utilizing a flipped classroom.

Decide which days and lessons will be flipped lessons. I am planning to flip the lesson, not the entire class due to the elementary age and level of engagement.
Record actual lesson via flip camera or webcam

Talk to other 3rd grade teachers, I want to introduce a topic using the flipped model.
Have students and parents share their feedback on my website.
Choose 4 students at random from my math flipped classroom and 4 students from another 3rd grade general ed classroom. Assess their knowledge and understanding in a particular math topic. I want to compare and contrast their strengths and weaknesses.

Irving ISD teks check and other formal district assessments, which will be documented at a later time.
Analyze overall scores for specific content, which was flipped and also compare similar content, which was taught as teacher led whole group.

Survey students in my flipped math classroom, on the following:
Has watching a video before class helped them understand a math topic?

Do they typically watch the video at home or at school?

Would they prefer to work as a class to learn the lesson or on the computer?

You have some good questions in place and a good idea of where to go with this. I, personally, would wonder about the data from comparing 5 kids from your class under flipped vs 5 kids from another teacher under standard. Since the teachers are different, the data's not really comparative. But, it's the same curriculum, so, I don't know. I'm not an expert.

The other thing I noticed is your dates end in November. I had a plan that I wanted to end in December and I was told by Dr. Abshire that it wasn't long enough because our course 7 is supposed to be the midway point, and we can't write a midway point analysis if we're already done... I don't know. It's something you might want to make sure of. Good luck! I love flipped and would love to see how this works out in an elementary class since I'm more used to secondary.

Thanks for the comment! Also, I appreciate the info on the date. I will change that! I didn't think about the data and how it could be different. I will talk to my principal and see what she wants to do! Thanks again!

Debbie, I really enjoyed reading your plan! I have never heard of a flipped classroom and I am excited to read your results. I think you are ready to jump in and get started. Im not sure that finishing your project swiftly will be a problem, but it's always a good idea to check just to be sure. Good luck!
